Us: Amtrak to test trains on Point Defiance Bypass for first time since deadly derailment
Three years after a fatal train derailment, testing will begin Saturday on Amtrak’s Point Defiance Bypass.
Sound Transit says Amtrak will run test trains between the Tacoma Dome Station and the Nisqually Junction from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The trains will be running up to 79 mph.
Amtrak Cascades train 501 derailed on Dec, 18, 2017 as it entered a curve on an overpass, above I-5, on the inaugural run of Point Defiance Bypass, between Seattle and Portland. The curve was a 30 mph zone and investigators say the train was traveling at 78 mph.
The lead locomotive and four rail cars tumbled off the tracks and fell onto I-5, striking eight vehicles. Three people died, 57 were injured from the train and eight from the vehicles that were hit.
