Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced Thursday that Transportation Security Administration officers who provided what she described as “exemplary service” during the 43-day government shutdown will be awarded a $10,000 bonus. The payment is intended for agents who continued reporting for duty without pay, often taking extra shifts to keep airport security operations functioning despite mounting delays and staff shortages.
According to DHS, only a selected group of officers who met specific performance criteria during the shutdown will receive the full bonus. The department said the measure aims both to acknowledge extraordinary commitment and to help affected families recover financially after weeks without pay.
The announcement follows widespread disruptions across U.S. airports during the shutdown, as thousands of federal employees were either furloughed or required to work without compensation. Tsa staff shortages led to longer lines and delays, prompting calls for financial relief once the government reopened.
The partial federal government shutdown — the longest in U.S. history — lasted 43 days and left tens of thousands of federal workers without pay. DHS had previously committed to paying back wages to affected personnel; the newly announced $10,000 bonus serves as an additional recognition for Tsa officers who maintained security operations under unprecedented strain.
