Tensions remain high in Garoua after gunfire erupted targeting people gathered to protect Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s home. According to Tchiroma’s team, units identified locally as the FMO fired point-blank at the crowd forming a human shield. The candidate’s camp reports two fatalities.
In a statement circulated by his aides, Issa Tchiroma said: “Toll of their attack: two dead. I wonder what will be said this time. Shooting point-blank at your own brothers — I can’t help but wonder if you’re mercenaries. Kill me if you want, but I will liberate this country by any means necessary.” He also denounced the “notorious impunity.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed the casualty figures. Videos and eyewitness accounts on social media show chaotic scenes and wounded people, while local calls for calm continue.
These events follow the Constitutional Council’s proclamation of Paul Biya’s re-election, a result contested by Issa Tchiroma and his supporters who claim the vote was stolen. Since the announcement, cities including Douala and Garoua have seen protests, roadblocks and clashes with security forces. The situation remains volatile and unresolved.
